The Trott House Inn:
A 127-Year-Old Legacy of Hospitality
What began as a humble cabin in 1897 has become a beloved landmark in the heart of Newton. Originally used by the Wanamaker family and their business partners as lodging during visits from Pennsylvania, the property took on new life in the early 1900s when William Walker Trott purchased it. In 1916, the original cabin was expanded into the gracious Colonial Revival home that still stands today.
For much of the 20th century, the Trott family called the house home. After the passing of the last two Trott siblings—Linda Trott Corriher and John Burdette Trott—the home fell into disrepair. But its story was far from over.
In 1994, Mary Spiggle, a Florida native with a vision, purchased the property and transformed it into Newton’s first bed and breakfast. Just one year later, the Trott House Inn officially opened its doors. Not long after, the inn was sold to Newton native Anne Jordan (formerly Steadman), who lovingly ran the property for nearly two decades, welcoming guests, hosting events, and even entertaining notable visitors like Denzel Washington and his family.
The next chapter began in 2018, when Anne Abernathy Wepner acquired the inn, continuing the legacy of warmth and hospitality. Like many small businesses, the inn faced unexpected challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and temporarily shut its doors.
In June 2022, the story came full circle. Miles and Makenzie Saenger, Catawba County natives, returned home to breathe new life into this historic space. As its newest caretakers, they don’t just see The Trott House Inn as a place to stay, but as a living story, one they feel honored to continue. With each guest welcomed and every porch light left on, they hope to carry forward the charm, community, and quiet magic that have always defined this home.
